2. Objective
Purpose of the Event
The Terrarium Making Workshop was organized to promote environmental awareness and sustainable living by introducing participants to the art and science of creating self-sustaining miniature ecosystems. The workshop aimed to provide hands-on experience in terrarium design, familiarize students with suitable plant species and substrate preparation, and encourage creativity while fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and plant conservation.

Description
The Department of Botany, in association with YWCA, Alangad, successfully organized a Terrarium Making Workshop on 10 July 2026 at the B.Sc. Botany Laboratory.
The workshop was led by Ms. Lakshmi Ashok Kumar, Facilitator at Bhoomi Learning Community, Eroor, who shared her expertise in terrarium design and maintenance. The session began with an introduction to the concept of closed ecosystems, followed by an explanation of the materials required for terrarium construction, including drainage layers, activated charcoal, substrate mixtures, decorative elements, and suitable plant species.
Participants were guided through each stage of assembling a terrarium. They learned techniques for selecting compatible plants, arranging decorative materials, maintaining moisture balance, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the miniature ecosystem.
The workshop combined theoretical knowledge with practical learning, allowing every participant to design and create their own terrarium under expert guidance. The session concluded with discussions on terrarium care, troubleshooting common issues, and the ecological significance of indoor green spaces.
