2. Objective

Purpose of the Event

The BioQuest LabX – Future Biologists Laboratory Program was organized as an extension initiative to provide higher secondary students with hands-on exposure to biological laboratory techniques. The program aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application by introducing students to modern laboratory practices in Botany and Life Sciences. It also sought to stimulate scientific curiosity, develop observational and analytical skills, and inspire students to pursue higher education and careers in biological sciences.

3. Event Summary

The Department of Botany successfully organized BioQuest LabX – Future Biologists Laboratory Program for Plus One Biology students of Vidhyodaya School, Thevakkal on 07 July 2026.

The sessions were coordinated by Dr. Anumol Jose and Dr. Reshmi G. R., who guided the students through a series of practical demonstrations and laboratory activities. Students were introduced to the working principles of various laboratory instruments and participated in experiments designed to enhance their understanding of biological concepts.

The practical sessions included:

  • Mitosis smear preparation using onion root tips
  • DNA isolation from plant material
  • Pollen sterility analysis
  • Paper Chromatography
  • Anatomical slide demonstration

The resource persons explained each experiment with emphasis on scientific principles, laboratory safety, specimen handling, and interpretation of observations. Students actively participated in all sessions and interacted enthusiastically with the faculty members.

6. Feedback

The participants expressed great enthusiasm and appreciated the opportunity to perform experiments in a well-equipped laboratory. They found the sessions highly informative, interactive, and engaging. The students particularly enjoyed the DNA isolation experiment and microscopic observations, stating that the practical exposure enhanced their understanding beyond textbook learning. Teachers accompanying the students also appreciated the systematic organization and educational value of the program.

Photographs and videos documenting the laboratory sessions, demonstrations, student participation, and group interactions were captured during the event and have been archived by the Department of Botany for institutional records and future reference.

8. Future Recommendations

  • Conduct BioQuest LabX as an annual outreach programme for higher secondary schools.

  • Strengthen collaborations with more schools to promote scientific learning among young students.
